Mother's Rebel

I love thrift stores, to say the least. I also love sharing my favorite thrift store gems with my friends, because sharing is caring, and I care to share. I also care that my friends should get a bang for their buck and/or find good quality material for their creative projects. As is the case of my dear friend, and founder of Mother's Rebel, Victoria Rodríguez. Under her sleeve, this Magazine journalism sophomore is brewing a whole brand of hand painted thrifted jackets. You want a personalized denim or leather jacket?   Mothers Rebel got your back, quite literally.

And so it goes, after drawing Frida Kahlo on the denim vest of Cosmo for Latinas Fashion Editor ―which is featured in CFL’s fall '15  issue ― everything escalated from there. Next thing you know, she got more requests but needed more denim. That’s where I come in (*cue superhero music here*).  I showed her the magical existence of thrift stores, and after that we sort of made it a ritual to go after work to Crossroads or Buffalo Exchange as to search for the perfect find. There were good days and there were bad days but it was always fun nonetheless. (My idea of fun revolving around  my $35 Kenzo skirt score and trying to convince Vicky that she really did need that deep red leather jacket, because $15, that's why.)

Long story short, this is the 411 behind the thrifted jacket I am sporting in this post. If you’re a Haim fan, like Victoria and I are (remember one of my first posts here on the blog?), you’ll quickly recognize that the design is a lyric from their song “My song 5”. Also, if you enjoy good photography you will notice Anumehas Sinha eye for a clean and timeless picture. Needless to say,  everything  came together better than planned, pizzas were devoured in the process, and the future of Mothers Rebel keeps looking brighter and brighter!

Moral of the story:
I’ve learned that NYC always brings together a wholesome bunch of crazy talented people and I’m so glad that this time around I had the opportunity to collaborate with these ladies that are just that:  crazy talented.

  12. hahah "because $15, that's why." You're my kind of friend. And what an awesome idea your friend had, I love the idea of frida on my jacket. I'm right there with you with the love of thrift stores- yesterday I bought an amazing pair of pants for fifty cents. FIFTY CENTS. I can't tell you what costs that little nowadays. A packet of ranch at McDonalds? I don't even know.
